JOB DESCRIPTION

Work includes repairing, fabricating and assembling boilers, tanks, vats, pressure vessels, heat exchanges and many other items made of metal plate. Boilermakers assemble and erect prefabricated parts and fittings at construction sites where the boilers or other pressure vessels are to be used after installation is completed, make all necessary tests to check for defects. They also do repair work in the field. A variety of tools are used, and rigging equipment is used at times during erection of units.

The program involves 6,000 hours (usually about 4 years) of on-the-job training, related study lessons, and 3 weeks of extensive training held at the training center each year.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants are required to complete an application and present a copy of their birth certificate and either a high school diploma or GED.

HIRING AND SELECTION PROCEDURES

Applications are then combined with other applications taken during the quarter and placement is based on previous job skills such as welding certification and training such as technical school or college.

Tools Needed

Contractors provide necessary tools. Workers just need their own work boots and gloves.

Transportation Requirements

All workers/apprentices must have their own vehicle; job sites vary from day to day, and can be anywhere in Minnesota, North Dakota or South Dakota.

Hours

Any time any day, 24 hours and 7 days a week. Workers may be called at any time a need arises. While boilermaking is not a seasonal occupation, more jobs are available in the spring and the fall.

Wages

Apprentices start at 70% of the journeyperson’s wage. After each six (6) months and completion of required lessons an evaluation test is given. After passing the exam(s), apprentices will receive an increase in pay.

Union Dues

After a 2,000 hour probationary period the apprentice will pay an initiation fee and purchase a book; the total cost is $550. Membership dues are $38.40 per month, plus 4% field dues.
